Keweenaw
A map of the Keweenaw taken from Mapquest… Dollar Bay is right under the big star.

Some links to local places we like…
Copper Country Explorer: A website dedicated to all of the historic remains around the area. It tells the story of the old cities, mines, mills etc. And has a number of really nice pictures. We have been to many of these sites as well.
Copper Country Humane Society: This is the shelter where we adopted both Ocean and Pinga. It is located on Highway 41 just South of Houghton and Michigan Tech, near the Nara nature reserve.
Keweenaw Co-Op: The co-op is located in Hancock on Ethel Ave. which is a side street off of Highway 41 that winds through the city. We like to shop here for different things to eat and will often head here to find some lunch on a weekend. They have a good deli for sandwiches and they have a large selection of special cheese (like Feta!) and wine/beer. For the normal grocery items and produce they tend to have mostly organic or specialty type items and are much higher priced than a normal grocery store so we don’t buy much in the way of groceries here. They also have a nice selection of books ranging from country living to baking and plants etc. which we like to browse when we are in the store too (and more often than not bring home with us!)
Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly: Our local chapter of Little Brothers is located in downtown Hancock. Maddie occasioanlly volunteers with their bigger events and regularly visits an elderly lady named Eleanor as a volunteer.
Michigan Technological University: Michigan Tech’s website. This is where both Joe and I went to college.
Mining Gazette: Here is our local newspaper. I would order it if I could get a weekend edition, although even that would be pointless for now because only some of the fliers come out on the weekend. I can’t even figure out when the rest come out. People have told me Monday, Thursday and Friday and I’ve also heard Saturday but I know it is not Saturday because I have purchased a few weekend edition papers and have not found any of the promised fliers. So it’s more like…if all the fliers for the grocery stores and all of the coupons and ads etc. were put into the weekend edition, and they would sell me just that edition each week… then I would purchase it. Otherwise it is much easier to read online if I want something, and normally it is only to look at jobs and classifieds for anything fun.
I was doing some research on farming in the U.P. and came across your blog. It’s great to read about an area I am so familiar with. My dad lives in Hubbell, my mom lives in South Range. My mom and my aunt also volunteer for the Little Brothers organization.
Great work on the blog.
Oh that’s great! Both your parents are very close. You would probably drive almost right past us if you traveled between their houses. I don’t do as much with Little Brothers anymore as I used to, or probably should still do, but I do visit an elderly lady regularly and I’m headed to L.B. tomorrow to pick up her Christmas gift from them. Our area is lucky to have them and all of their volunteers that do so much. I think it means a lot to a lot of older people who don’t have many others around.
